Nurses work tirelessly as they dedicate their lives to saving complete strangers. Yet the minute those patients get better, they often disappear from their nurses’ lives forever without so much as an update. This nurse, however, got something even better when a grateful patient tracked her down years later.
As Amanda Scarpinati grew up, she would often stare at pictures that her family had saved of the kind nurse who had watched over and cared for her when she was in the Albany Medical Center hospital after being badly burned. “People would ask me ‘who’s the woman holding you?’ and I never had a name,” Amanda said.
38 years after her hospital stay, Amanda decided to post her photos to social media in an attempt to locate and meet her guardian angel. “I would love to know her name and possibly get a chance to talk to her and meet her,” she wrote in her Facebook post.
Soon after that post, Amanda was contacted by another nurse who claimed she had worked with the mystery woman in 1977. The stranger was right, the nurse in the photos was Susan Burger, and they immediately got to work to reunite the two.
Susan was just 21 years old at the time the photos were taken, and Amanda was one of her first patients. “All I could think of was when I picked her up, she just melted in my arms,” Susan said of the patient she never forgot.
“I get to know the woman in the picture now,” Amanda told NBC News.
