Teachers dedicate their entire lives to their students, and often spend much of their own free time and money on their students to ensure they are given the best learning environment possible. So when 28-year-old Samuel Nalbandian decided he wanted to marry his girlfriend of three years, he knew he had to involve her students in the proposal.
When Jennifer Lai was talking to another teacher before class started, Nalbandian and Lai’s sister, Jessica, went to fill the kids in on the plan. When class started and Lai walked in, she could tell her students were being more quiet than normal, but her principal David Warken ushered her to take a seat to watch a special movie with the kids.
The movie was a kid-friends reenactment of their love story form the very first time they met, and when it was over, the kids got up and held up letters that spelled out ‘Will you marry me?’ “I was in complete shock and it’s usually really hard to surprise me,” Lai said.
Nalbandian then walked in with a bouquet of flowers and got on one knee. Lai was completely stunned, but said yes immediately. “We spoke about getting married, but I never imagined it would happen at work,” Lai said. “I’m so happy it did though because my students were able to share the moment with me and Sam knows how important my students are to me.”
After witnessing the special moment, Lai’s first-graders gave her their handmade cards to congratulate her on the unforgettable moment they got to be a part of.
