When given the chance to make a wish with the Make-A-Wish organization, most kids dream of meeting their favorite celebrity, going to Disney World, or even going on a trip around the world. Yet this young girl battling brain cancer only had one wish: help the planet.
Eight-year-old Amelia Meyer has been battling brain cancer, yet is determined to help make the parks in Kansas City safer, cleaner, and more beautiful. Yet in order to make a bigger impact on the environment, Amelia and her family contacted Make-A-Wish to organize a day where she and anyone who wanted to help could go out and clean up the trash in four of the city’s parks.
“She could’ve wished to go to Disney, she could’ve wished to go on a cruise or go to Europe, and her wish was to take care of the world for the day,” said Haw, a manager with the foundation. “I just can’t tell you how much I wish other children would be this much of an inspiration.”
When the day finally came, Amelia was stunned at how many people came out to support her and make her wish come true. Throughout the day, the mayor, the fire department, a soccer tea, and other volunteers came out to help. “I thought there was just going to be some people, not this much,” Amelia said.
“With all of the excitement that’s been around this wish and getting people involved and getting the word out there, it’s helped us forget for a little bit,” Amelia’s mother Jill said. “We didn’t think it would go like this. We were hoping for 30 people at Swope Park picking up trash. It’s a very, very hard time for us but to see this that this came out of that. My level of gratitude is unbelievable. My kid is so happy today and that’s what it’s about and that just thrills me beyond words.”
