Without the help of animal rescue leagues, like the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire, many stray and abandoned animals end up eating things they shouldn’t or don’t eat at all. Yet, after a burglar stole about 65 bags of pet food from their food pantry, they had no way of feeding their animals.

When staff from the animal rescue league, which helps over 2,000 dogs and cats each year, went to feed their animals on Sunday morning, they were shocked to see the entire pantry was bare. “I don’t know what your thought process is when you decide to steal donated pet food from a food pantry,” said Monica Zulauf, president and CEO of the rescue. “I never really want to understand that thought process.”

“A staff person came in the morning and noticed that someone had pushed through the chicken wire on our community food pantry and they had taken everything,” Zulauf said. “They left one small bag of kitten food.”

But before they knew it, people began lining up in the parking lot to donate and replace the stolen food, and ended up with at least four times more food than they originally had.

“The community response was amazing,” Zulauf said. “It was a steady stream of everything — from toddlers carrying little bags of cat treats to families who had picked up full bags of pet food.”

“A day that began with sadness and shock, ended up filling our hearts over-the-top! We were confident we would replace the stolen food, but your support – the support from our community – far exceeded our wildest expectations! We are overwhelmed by the generosity of hundreds of people,” the Animal League of New Hampshire wrote in a post to Facebook after the community rallied behind them to replace the stolen food.
