He might be the king of the jungle, but this young lion named Lambert is proving that even kings need their baby blankets for a good night of sleep.
Originally, Lambert had been illegally purchased by a dad for his two children after his 2-year-old and 3-year-old watched The Lion King. “The little kids told their daddy they wanted a Simba, so he went out and bought them one,” said Vicky Keahey, founder of Texas’ In-Sync Exotic Wildlife Rescue and Educational Center.
Soon enough, however, the family got tired of the 3-month-old lion cub, and contacted the Global Federation of Animals Sanctuaries (GFAS) to find him a home in a sanctuary as he was now too tame to be released into the wild. Keahey accepted Lambert immediately to her rescue center, and went to pick him up herself.
At first, Lambert seemed excited and was curious of his big, new exposure, but then got very anxious. “We had heard from the previous owners that he slept in the bed with the grandfather,” Keahey said as she started to realize the problem.
“I started thinking, ‘Okay, he’s used to being in a house, he’s used to sleeping in the bed with grandpa.’ So I got him a blanket, went into the enclosure and put the blanket in one of the corners. He curled up on that blanket and he went right to sleep. Ever since then, I always give him a blanket,” Keahey said.
