Approximately 1.3 billion tonnes of food gets thrown away each year, which is not only wasteful, but so disappointing considering 1 in 9 people on our planet go hungry every night.
While one person alone can’t fix the problem, this woman decided to do her part in ending hunger in her community. Minu Pauline is the owner of the Pappada Vada restaurant in Kochi, India, and knew all too well how much food was getting wasted each day when people were going hungry and struggling to stay alive.
To help put an end to food waste, Minu decided to install a fridge in front of the restaurant for anyone to use. Minu welcomed the community to bring in leftover food that is still good to the fridge, which she is paying to keep running 24/7.
So far, the ‘Nanma Maram‘ fridge has been a hit with the locals, and apart from community donations, the restaurant stocks the fridge with 50 fresh food packets each day for he homeless.
Can you believe this system hasn’t been adopted in more communities? Let us know what you think in the comments below, and please SHARE this with friends on Facebook.
