‘Sophisticated’ might not be the first word you think of to describe farm animals like cows who spend their days munching on grass, but it turns out we’re not the only ones in the animal kingdom who appreciate the arts.

Researchers at the University of Leicester first discovered cows’ appreciation for music back in 2001, when they found that cows who were exposed to relaxing music produced 3% more milk because the relaxing music put them in better, more relaxed moods. To see how cows would react to different instruments, three Cleveland-based musicians played the violin, guitar, and oboe for cows Kayli, Maybelle, Mike, and Maribeth.

When exposed to music, most animals show no signs of interest, but these four cows were instantly curious when they heard music from across the field, and immediately went over to investigate.

Incredibly, the cows walked right up to the fence, and even the shyest cow of the group got as close as possible. After listening to the different instruments, the cows stunned the musicians when they started swaying along and brushing their tails to the music.
