While many mothers prefer to breastfeed their child over giving them formula in a bottle, there are a number of different issues that can make breastfeeding impossible, not to mention dangerous for the baby.
After months of almost exclusively breastfeeding her 11-month-old son Rio, single mother of two Ronja Wiedenbeck panicked when she was suddenly unable to feed her baby because she had gotten sick and was put on strong medications. Since Rio was not comfortable with drinking from a bottle, Ronja panicked that her son would not have food.
Desperate for help, Ronja turned to the Breastfeeding Yummy Mummies Facebook group and asked if any moms would be willing to feed her son while she was in the hospital. “I was pumped full of morphine and it seemed instinctive for someone to feed him in a way that he has been used to and he’s comfortable with,” Ronja said.
Moms instantly reached out to offer their help, and within an hour, the first mom Leigh Ann Fearn arrived to feed Rio. “So much support it’s brought me to absolute tears. I cant express how grateful I am, that this super mum was happy to feed my son when I’m currently totally unable,” Ronja wrote in a post to Facebook.
“I thought it might feel unusual because it is something special that only Rio and I had shared, but it just felt totally instinctive for another mum to help him in a way he was used to,” Ronja said.
Her post in the 13,000 member group amazingly received about 1,000 offers to help feed Rio, and ultimately five different women helped feed him until Ronja was finally released and cleared to breastfeed again.
