Taking a baby out to a restaurant is a daunting task for any parent, as they never know exactly when a tantrum will start or if their babies will annoy other diners, which is why this mom chose to sit at a small table in the back.
Jessica Rudeen had had a few tough months and was struggling to feel like a good mother to her adorable daughter Caroline, so to make up for it, she decided to take her baby out to dinner ar Panera for a mommy-daughter dinner date. Yet when she arrived, the place was crowded and cramped.
“I scrunched us into the smallest spot in the place and ended up a foot away from an elderly couple. The look of the gentleman sitting next to me reminded me of the old man in “UP” — like he might scold Caroline for crossing over to his space,” Rudeen said.
To be polite, she said hello to the couple, but then Caroline jumped into the conversation and started showing off all her talents. Surprisingly, instead of looking bothered by her nonstop talking, the old man and his wife look completely thrilled that she would talk with them.
Rudeen was thrilled Caroline was so well-behaved throughout their meal, but when she lifted her out of the high chair, she ran around the restaurant giving everyone high fives and saying hello.
“But what the elderly gentleman next to me said in that moment grabbed my heart and squeezed it so hard I thought I would cry,” Rudeen said. “He looks over to me with a gentle smile on his face and says, ‘You can tell when a baby is really loved. You have loved her very well. You’re doing a great job.”
“I can’t take credit for all of it because I’ve got an amazing husband who loves her with everything he has in him and a whole village of people who love her as well. It certainly isn’t all me. But in that moment, my soul needed a lift, and an unassuming old man filled my heart to the brim and overflowed my cup.”
