Police officers are trained to follow their instinct and make split second decisions in highly stressful situations, but when a New Jersey police responded to a call about a distressed man walking on the highway, he had no idea his quick thinking would make him a hero.

While out on patrol, Riverdale Police Sgt. Greg Bogert was got a call about a distressed man on the highway who had been seen walking in front of oncoming cars, and heading in the direction on the ledge of the bridge. As Bogert pulled up, he saw the man was crying as he stepped in front of a car and he hoped to calmly talk to him and get him to relax. But the minute he pulled over, the man started running. “I didn’t have time to think,” Bogert said.

Bogert quickly jumped out of his patrol car and sprinted after the man who’s gaze was glued to the edge of the bridge as he ran. The man, who Bogert heard say ‘I just want to die’, manged to get one leg over the side, but Bogert grabbed him by the waist, dragged him back to safety, and pinned him down on the road.

Bogert was eventually able to calm the man down before he was taken to the hospital, and now people are thanking him for his heroic actions, which were caught on his dahsboard camera. “It’€™s just incredible what’€™s happening,” he said. “We’€™re not used to thank yous.”
