Parents try their hardest to make sure no harm comes to their precious children, but scratches and bruises are an unavoidable part of life, especially for a Florida mom who has her hands full with two young boys who like to play outside.
10-year-old Jaden Rivera is used to the occasional scrape and bruise from playing with friends, which is why he wasn’t phased when he fell off his bike and got a little road rash on his knees and elbow. Jaden, who wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time of the fall, got right back up and kept playing with his brother, and later convinced his worried parents that he was fine.
Jaden went to sleep that night feeling fine, aside from the road rash, and felt normal the following day as well. However, the following morning, Jaden was not himself when he woke up. “He woke up and was completely lethargic — didn’t want to move,” his mother, Tiffany Rivera, said. “That’s unusual for my son; the moment he wakes up he’s running around the house.”
Tiffany brought Jaden straight to the hospital after he started vomiting, and he was taken immediately for a CAT scan. Doctors pulled Tiffany aside and explained that her son had a right temporal fracture of the skull, and blood had formed between the inner surface of his skull and the outer protective lining. Jaden had a 50/50 chance of surviving, and only an hour to get into surgery before he would most likely die.
Jaden miraculously made it out of surgery, and doctors were stunned. “Normal cases like his, kids would have already been dead,” Rivera said. “He went to sleep… twice.”
Now, Tiffany and Jaden are trying to spread his story to warn other parents and kids how important it is to wear a helmet at all times while riding bikes. “He wants to show people [his scar],” Tiffany said. “He’s really up for wanting to help other kids.”
