7-year-old Audrey Nethery was born with a hole in her heart, a cleft palate, and a rare blood disorder called Diamond Blackfan Anemia (DBA), which makes it difficult for the body to circulate oxygen and produce red blood cells. From the moment she was born, her life has been an uphill battle, but she refuses to let it stop her from doing what she loves.
Despite her health problems, which also include stunted growth from having to take steroids, Audrey is still a 7-year-old girl who loves to sing and dance, and has actually gone viral in the past for her impressive Zumba moves, which parents Julie and Scott regularly posts to Facebook to raise awareness of DBA.
TV show host and cook Rachael Ray saw one of Audrey’s viral videos of her dancing, and knew she had to help make one of her dreams come true. Ray invited the 7-year-old Kentucky girl and her parents to New York where Audrey would get to meet and dance with the Brooklyn Nets dance team.
Audrey had absolutely no trouble keeping up with the group of professional dancers and got to show off some of her favorite moves. By the end of their performance on Ray’s show Rachael, both Ray and mom were in tears.
“Every time I see her dance, even when it’s just in her class, it makes me cry, but seeing her up on that stage was incredible. When she’s dancing, she’s happy and brings so much joy to everyone watching,” Julie said. After the knockout performance, the family took to their Facebook page to share: “What you don’t see is Rachael’s generous donation to our DBA fundraiser – $10,000!!!”
