Parents will do anything to protect their kids, and when summer starts, that means slathering on the sunscreen to protect their delicate skin from the sun. Yet most parents don’t realize that depending on the sunscreen, they might be doing more harm than good.

Many commercial sunscreens boast about how well a handful of ingredients in their product will protect your child’s skin, but if you’ve ever looked at the ingredient list on the back, you’ll see that there are a whole slew of chemicals that you don’t recognize and can’t pronounce, which could potentially be harming your child.

But since parents barely have time for a shower, nevermind researching chemicals in sunscreen, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has done the work for you and has released a list of the worst sunscreens you could be putting on your child’s skin.

The sunscreens on the list, many of which are probably lurking in your beach bag, contain potentially toxic chemicals like oxybenzone, which disrupts the hormone system, retinyl palmitate, which actually triggers skin damage in sunlight, and high SPFs that don’t actually offer any more protection than SPF 30-50. Two of the sunscreens on the list are spray formulations, which the EWG also warns parents against since they don’t cover skin well and can be easily inhaled.

Here are the top 10 worst sunscreens for children:

1.Banana Boat Kids Max Protect & Play Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 100
2.Coppertone Water Babies Sunscreen Stick, SPF 55
3.Coppertone Sunscreen Continuous Spray, Kids, SPF 70
4.Coppertone Sunscreen Lotion Kids, SPF 70+
5.Coppertone Foaming Lotion Sunscreen Kids Wacky Foam, SPF 70+
6.Coppertone Water Babies Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 70+
7.CVS Baby Sunstick Sunscreen, SPF 55
8.CVS Kids Wet & Dry Sunscreen Spray, SPF 70+
9.Equate Kids Sunscreen Stick, SPF 55
10.Hampton Sun Continuous Mist Sunscreen For Kids, SPF 70

If you’re using any of these sunscreens on your children, consider throwing them out, and try one from EWG’s best scoring sunscreen for kids list here.
