Babies and toddlers are bound to get a few bumps and bruises as they test out their wobbly limbs while exploring their surroundings, which is why one mom wasn’t too mad when her babysitter sent her a message letting her know that her baby had fallen over.
Rachel Pierson first got the Facebook message from her regular babysitter Autumn Skuse explaining that he fell over on the hardwood floor in their home. Skuse explained she was worried that he might not be ok, so Rachel told her to call 911.
Rachel and her husband rushed from work to the hospital where they met their little boy, however, when the doctors took a look at 8-month-old baby Thomas, he discovered he didn’t just bump his head but had three skull fractures, a fractured leg, and broken ribs, which had already begun to heal and signalled that the abuse has been going on for a while.
“This absolutely did not happen from him sitting on the floor and falling back and bumping his head,” Rachel explained. “The doctor said, ‘These injuries could not have been sustained from the story the babysitter was giving. There’s a lot more to this that she is not telling you.'”
Child Protective Services initially thought Rachel and her husband were behind the abuse, and took Thomas and his older brother away. But soon Skuse, who had been watching the boys six days a week for three months, admitted to throwing Thomas against the floor. “She admitted it, yes,” Rachel said. “I don’t understand how someone can admit to throwing a baby.”
Skuse has since been taken into custody, but before she was, she sent another Facebook message to Rachel trying to explain herself. “All I know is that after being raped and abused most of my life I have some mental health issues, anger issues, and that day I snapped,” Skuse wrote. “I dropped him on the floor. He was supposed to go on his pillow. I didn’t mean to hurt him. That’s why I’m going to the mental health on Monday and try to get help.”
“I wanted to kill her,” Pierson said. “I want her to be in jail forever.”
