Many homeless, abused, and abandoned dogs resist being rescued because they don’t trust that a stranger would actually help them instead of inflicting more harm to them.
Yet when rescuers tried to save a homeless dog they later named Petunia, they noticed she didn’t actually seem that scared of them. Petunia actually seemed to trust them, which is why the rescuers couldn’t understand why she was resisting them so much and trying to hide under a truck.
“I laid flat on my stomach and crawled under the truck,” said Eldad Hagar, founder of Hope for Paws. “Petunia wagged her tail nervously, but I knew we would be cool. At one moment this closeness made her nervous, and she got up to leave. That’s the moment when I grabbed her leg.”said Eldad Hagar, founder of Hope for Paws. “Petunia wagged her tail nervously, but I knew we would be cool. At one moment this closeness made her nervous, and she got up to leave. That’s the moment when I grabbed her leg.”
Hagar doesn’t normally like to grab dogs like that since it can make them more distressed, but he was afraid she’d run away again. However, the minute he held her in his arms and looked down at her belly, he realized why she had been resisting him. Petunia was lactating, which meant she was hiding a puppy somewhere nearby.
The rescuers got to work locating her baby, and quickly found her 3-day-old puppy they named Petals in a bush nearby, and the two instantly relaxed when they were reunited.
“Both Petunia and Petals are doing great,” Hagar said. “Little Petals hasn’t opened her eyes yet, but it should happen in the next few days. She is gaining weight and is quite happy to have her mom.”
