During times of trouble and natural disaster, emergency rescue teams are often stretched thin, which is why selfless heroes step up and put their lives at risk in order to help others who need rescuing.
After torrential rain hit Baton Rouge, Louisianna, and caused widespread flooding, thousands of people were left stranded and waiting for help as the flood waters quickly rose. Maurepas local Josh Pettit couldn’t sit back while people were stranded without food and water for days, so quickly got to work going out on rescue missions picking up strangers and bringing them to safety. At first, he went out in his pickup truck, but as water levels rose, he and other heroes went out on a boat to continue their work.
“I’ve been non-stop day and night for 3 days no sleep, physically and mentally exhausted. Rescuing hundreds of people from small kids to 80 yrs olds on roof tops and on top of floating cars etc,” Pettit wrote in a post to his Facebook.
After resting for a few hours, Pettit was back out at 7am to help areas that had been hit with 8 feet of flood waters in just two hours. “Out the corner of my eyes I seen a bush shaking! This is all I saw! Eyes and nose barely above water,” Pettit wrote about the moment he found a stranded dog who was too exhausted to swim any longer and was minutes from drowning.
“She could barely tread water anymore she was so worn out and had the saddest eyes I ever seen so scared for her life! We saved her and she came laid her head on my lap and cried and moaned like a big baby! She was thanking me. I thank God for letting me notice her.”
Pettit then rescued a vet and his animals, and left the traumatized dog in his care. Soon after, however, Pettit found out that the dog named Sadie, who ran away from her owner as they were evacuating after getting frightened by the flood, was thankfully reunited with her owner.
