It’s natural for kids to get bumps, bruises, and the occasional scrape as they explore the world around them, however, strangers and relatives started to think one mom was abusing her baby girl when burns started emerging all over her body.

When baby Isla Latham was born, the midwives were stunned when they saw the baby had no skin on her hands or feet. “Just hours after she was born her body was turning into one big blister. I was heartbroken,” Latham said. “Her skin went from bad to worse. She was given just weeks to live and no one knew what was wrong with my baby.”

A few weeks later, Isla was still alive but started getting sores that looked like burns all over her body, and people began coming up to 21-year-old Danni Latham and questioning her parenting skills. “People have stopped me in the street and asked ‘what have you done to her? Has she not worn suncream? She looks burnt?’ it’s so hurtful,” Latham said.

Despite how her daughter looked, Latham wasn’t doing anything unusual to her daughter, which is why she decided to go to another doctor to see what was causing the skin condition.

At just eight weeks old, doctors began testing Isla and discovered she was suffering from a rare condition called Epidermolysis bullosa (EB), which causes blisters to form all over the body.

“Children with the condition are also known as ‘butterfly children’ as they are very delicate to touch. When I was told there was no cure for my daughter’s skin condition, I was beyond devastated,” Latham said. “I have travelled across the UK to seek private health care and visit leading specialists but in order for Isla to lead a normal life there needs to be a breakthrough in treatment for research EB,” explained Latham, who is now sharing her daughter’s story to shed light on the condition and raise funds.

“I am determined to give my daughter the best possible future so I have started fundraising for Irvine McLean and his lab of human sciences. I will always do my best by Isla and although me and my family have had a tough few years, I won’t allow it to get us down,” she said.
