After racing to the scene, firemen from the Baltimore City Fire Department braced for the worst as they prepared to rescue an 8-month-old baby girl who had been trapped on the second floor of her home after a fire broke out.

Just moments before, everything had been fine as usual, which is why mom Erika Poremski stepped out quickly as her baby girl napped in her room to get something from the car, which was right outside the house. However, during that short time, a fire suddenly broke out and kept Erika from getting back inside no matter how hard she tried.

“I just heard her crying and I couldn’t get to her,” Poremski said. “I tried really hard, everyone in the neighborhood tried. They were kicking the doors in and kicking the windows out. I couldn’t (get her out). Nobody could.”

“I tried to keep getting it,” Erika said. “She was up the stairs, but the fire smoke was so heavy I couldn’t get past it . . . I kept running back out and back in, trying to get up there. Then, the door curling started falling and I couldn’t get back in.” Erika had been so focused on saving Viviana and her dog polo who was also trapped inside that she didn’t even realize she was getting burned on her face and hands as skin melted off from trying to grab at the railing.

Finally, firemen from the Baltimore City Fire Department arrived, and rushed in to save Viviana, but they were stunned when they got to the second floor and found Polo lying on top of the baby shielding her from the flames. “She only had burns on her side because of it,” Poremski said. “He stayed with her the whole time in the bedroom and wouldn’t even come downstairs to get out the door.”

Incredibly, the firemen were able to revive Viviana at the scene, but sadly Polo didn’t make it out after sacrificing his own life to protect the baby. Thanks to Polo, Viviana only suffered burns to 18 percent of her body, and while she is in critical condition at the hospital, she most likely would have died in the fire without Polo.
