From the day a child is born, they rely on their parents for absolutely everything from food and shelter to love and protection, which is why what one couple did to their baby online is so disgusting.

While thousands of people around the world struggle with infertility and would pay any price to have a baby of their own, one German couple actually tried to sell their infant for a profit online. The parents, whose identities have not been revealed, posted the ad on eBay, which has since been taken down by the site.

In the ad, the 40-day-old newborn girl named Maria was listed for sale for just 5,000 Euros, or about $5,500 US dollars, and showed photos of the dark-haired baby in three different outfits. Yet within a half hour, eBay swiftly deleted the ad after receiving complaints from users who were concerned for the baby’ safety.

‘We received a lot of complaints from users and we immediately pursued the matter. In such a case, we provide the authorities with all available information,” eBay spokesperson Pierre Du Bois said. “We immediately ban these providers. We have specially trained teams which keep track on such cases and quickly react.”
