Veterinarians are supposed to do everything in their power to protect and save animals, which is why one man was shocked when he discovered what a vet trainee did to a perfectly healthy dog.

Fifty-year-old Chris Holmyard had been out walking his dog near Miramar Beach in India when he saw a dog cowering under a bush.

“He was hiding behind a bush in a field that was beginning to flood, as it was the start of monsoon season,” Chris said. “He tried to scrabble away when I caught him, but it was not until I had him in my hands I realized, to my utter disbelief, his paws were missing.”

“The cut was so clean it looked like a vet had purposefully amputated them. The next day I took the puppy to the Animal Hospital in Campal and the vet agreed. She said it looked so purposeful it was probably an amputation by someone who was practicing to become a vet,” Chris explained. “It was just so tragic that he had been abandoned afterwards.”

Chris left the dog in the vet’s care, but when he returned to visit a few weeks later, he noticed that the 14-month-old mixed pup was looking thin and wasn’t coping well with his new environment and decided he would take him home and care for him. “Several vets told me it was best to euthanize him as no one would want him. They argue it would be better to put him down now and not let him suffer any more,” Chris said about the dog, who he named Prince.

“I could not see that he was suffering, and I decided I was willing to take him in so there was no need to put him to sleep. I found a vet who could finish his wounds properly to allow him to walk without any pain. Now he is the most playful and inquisitive dog I know,” said Chris, who is taking Prince back to England and hopes to get him a wheelchair to help him gain mobility.
