Almost every school bans students from bringing illegal drugs to school, as they should. However, they also prohibit students from possessing anything that looks like drugs, too.

The problem is, most kids don’t even know what drugs look like. This is exactly why a group of kids from Eagles Nest Elementary School in South Carolina had no idea they were breaking any rules when they were caught buying bags of a powder substance called ‘happy crack,’ a mixture of sugar and Kool-Aid, from another student.

The school immediately suspended the students involved and even considered expelling them over the incident, which has many parents outraged since it was just sugar. “The way she called me, I thought my son died,” one parent said. “She said there’s this epidemic going on at school with happy crack.”

“I Googled it. I’m like Kool-Aid and sugar, are you serious? I was appalled,” the parent continued. “I was floored. I really didn’t think it would go to this extreme.” Despite parents’ outrage at what they see as an excessive punishment, the school is sticking to their decision.

“No student will market or distribute any substance which is represented to be or is substance similar in color, shape, size or markings of a controlled substance in any of the circumstances listed above. Look-alike substance or substances that mimic the effect of drugs will be treated as illegal substances,” the school explained in a statement.

Do you think these kids deserve to get suspended from school over sugar?
