After tracking down a sick and starving stray dog, one California-based animal rescue team quickly realized that it wasn’t going to be a typical case once they got a better look at the lost and disoriented dog.

Once the Hope For Paws rescue team got closer to the starving dog, they realized she wasn’t actually a dog, as they had first thought. Instead, she appeared to be a high content wolf dog. However, they were still determined to rescue her since she was clearly suffering.

“This poor girl was so swollen from infections,” Hope for Paws founder Eldad Hagar said about the dog, who they later named Julia. “She was bleeding, pus was oozing from everywhere, and it’s hard to see because of this coat, but she is just skin and bones.”

“Even though Julia was so skinny and starved, she took food so gently. Julia was so confused, so tired, and it was so nice that she accepted our touch almost instantly,” said Hager, who was so surprised since many neglected or abused wolf dogs can be aggressive towards people.

After the team had managed to gain more of Julia’s trust and slip a leash around her neck, they raced her to the vet where they discovered the full extent of her injuries. Julia was suffering from demodectic mange, had inflamed skin, swollen paws, severely overgrown nails, and was covered in sores that oozed blood and pus.

“When we got the water running, we noticed right away how skinny she was,” Hagar said. “Just awful to see. Julia started bleeding from everywhere. As dirt and blood was coming down into the tub, Julia changed color from a grey and red to a black and yellow.”

The severe infection had taken a toll on Julia who struggled to regain her strength at first. “She lost her appetite, she has fever, but she is of course getting the best supportive care at the hospital,” he said. “I am sure she will be OK — she just needs more time to heal, and gain strength. When we found her she was in a total state of starvation… She is only two years old, but such an old soul. I can’t even imagine what she had gone through during all this time since she was born.”

What would you have done if you saw this sick animal roaming the streets?
