Police are used to catching people with unusual and sometimes incriminating objects during routine traffic stops.

However, Australian police officers were completely speechless by what they discovered in one woman’s purse.

At around 8:55 on Sunday night, police officers pulled over a 50-year-old East Brisbane woman. However, after looking her name up in the system, they arrested her for ‘outstanding matters.’ And when the police asked the woman if she had anything to declare while they detained her, she admitted that she had a baby koala in her zipped up canvas bag.

“Not quite believing their ears the officers cautiously unzipped the bag and found this gorgeous boy,” the Upper Mount Gravatt Tactical Crime Squad explained. According to the woman, she had found the 6-month-old koala on the side of the road the previous night, and she had planned on bringing him home and caring for him, which is illegal without a special permit.

“There are many firsts in our job and last night was one of those for officers from the Upper Mount Gravatt Tactical Crime Squad,” the police said in an official statement. Luckily, the koala was in good health. “He’s been on fluids but is doing well and will shortly be going out to a carer,” said RSPCA Queensland spokesperson Michael Beatty.“He weighs 1.5 kg and we’ve called him Alfred.”

Now, the police and the RSPCA are sharing the incident to show what not to do if you find a koala, who is protected under the Nature Conservation Act, or any other wild animal. “Often the animal may have no obvious signs of injury, but it can have internal injuries that need immediate attention,” the team explained.
