While most people dread the first snowfall of the winter season, one New York mom was thrilled to see the first snowfall with her baby, since she was never supposed to survive long enough to see it.
When Johanna Morton was 12 weeks pregnant last December, doctors delivered the devastating news that there was something wrong with her baby’s heart during a routine exam. “They told me I was going to miscarry,” Morton said. “A week or two after when I didn’t miscarry, it seemed like every appointment we would be told something else was wrong with her heart, another diagnosis.”
Morton never miscarried, but as her due date approached, doctors warned her the baby would be stillborn. However, on June 14th baby Clara Ray was delivered at 37 weeks and was very much alive. “It was a miracle she hung on,” Morton said. “Even in the operating room, they couldn’t tell me if she would be born alive.”
Clara Ray defied all the odds, but the months after her birth have still been incredibly difficult. She had open heart surgery at just six days old and has been diagnosed with borderline HLHS (hypoplastic left heart syndrome), pulmonary hypertension and intestinal malrotation. However, a month after birth, her parents finally got to take her home and have been cherishing every day that they have with their miracle baby.
And on November 20, Morton got to show her daughter snow for the first time, which she never thought would happen. “The photos say it all. It was as if time stood still for both my husband and I. For a moment she wasn’t sick, and everything was just perfect. We knew whatever her future holds for her; that moment will forever be a memory,” Morton said. “Last year, we dreamed about this very moment. God is so good!”
