Life as a soldier in combat is incredibly difficult and dangerous, but for soldiers returning home, settling back into civilian life can be even harder.
And when Texas-based Clay Luthy returned from his time serving in the Air Force, he struggled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which made it nearly impossible to hold down a job. However, that all changed when he got his service dog named Charlotte.
“I got her as a puppy. And she was never supposed to be a service dog. I found out a couple years ago she was alerting me and I didn’t even know it,” Luthy said. Now Charlotte is his official service dog, but once he was ready to get a job, he struggled to find one that would allow him to have Charlotte while at work.
“I was trying to figure out where I could go that would be a good fit and it wouldn’t mind having Charlotte, and my wife said I was at Lowe’s so much anyway, I might as well get a job there,” he said. Luthy applied for a job at Lowe’s and was thrilled when he heard they were going to hire him and Charlotte. “We knew he was gonna make a great employee – we just got the benefit of getting Charlotte right along with him,” Jay Fellers, Lowe’s human resources manager, said.
Recently, a picture of Luthy and Charlotte at work together was shared on the internet, and it’s gone viral as people praise Lowe’s for hiring the pair. “By the time I looked at it, there was 1,000 comments on it. Oh my gosh, it was ridiculous,” Luthy said. “I found a way to have a productive life and my prescription is four-legged.”
