Seeing the flashing lights from a cop car in your rearview mirror is enough to make anyone’s stomach drop, but for a few unsuspecting drivers, being pulled over by the police turned out to be the highlight of their day.
In order to spread holiday cheer and show their appreciation for residents, Officer Alberto Acevado and Officer Brianna Yarborough from the Suffolk County Police Department spent their day pulling over drivers and handing out candy canes and $50 Target gift cards instead of tickets.
The officers specifically targeted families or drivers with kids in the car, who looked worried at first but quickly lit up when they saw who was walking towards their window. “Good morning, I’m Santa Claus from the Fifth Precinct,” Acevedo said to the drivers and their kids before delivering the presents.
And it wasn’t just a fun experience for the drivers. “For once it’s a great feeling to pull cars over,” Yarborough said. “A lot of times we pull them over and we’re the bearer of bad news… To see the faces of these children, you can’t beat that.”
“Our residents mean so much to every member of the Suffolk County Police Department; the men and women of the SCPD are passionate about serving the communities they are tasked to protect,” Police Commissioner Timothy D. Sini said. “We try to go above and beyond every day, but this time of year we try to find special ways to give back. On behalf of the Suffolk County Police Department, I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.”
