When children are awake, parents have to watch them like hawks to make sure they don’t hurt themselves or wander away, and most parents can only relax once their kids are safely sleeping in their beds.
When one Detroit mom knew her toddler was sound asleep in his bedroom, she thought it wouldn’t be a big deal to step out of the apartment to the parking lot talk with a friend since she was standing right at the building’s entrance. However, when she returned back to the apartment and checked on her son, she panicked when he wasn’t in his bed where she left him or anywhere else in the apartment.
While the little boy’s mother was outside, he woke up and realized his mom wasn’t there, and decided to go out searching for her. Unfortunately, he used a side exit that was out of his mother’s view and wandered over to a nearby gas station in nothing but his pajamas and socks.
At around 4:30 a.m., the gas station surveillance camera caught the little boy struggling to open the gas station’s door, and when he finally did, he ran inside to get warm and ask for help finding his mom. The clerk and a customer wrapped him in a blanket and gave him some food before calling the police.
The police arrived shortly after, but just as they put him in the car, his frantic mom ran over looking for him. “His mother ended up running up to the gas station, and he was like, ‘That’s my mother, right there,’” said Detroit Police Officer Tinisha Alexander. The officers handed the relieved mom back her little boy since it’s not unusual for toddlers to wander off at night, but Child Protective Services will still investigate further.
