Within a few weeks of birth, puppies rely on their legs and paws for everything from playing, running, and exploring their surroundings. However, that was extremely difficult for one puppy born without back paws.
The Best Friend Animal Society in Kanab, Utah, found the puppy later named Justin with his siblings under a house in Arizona, but when they looked closer at Justin, they realized he was born without his two back paws. And as his siblings grew and started walking, they noticed Justin was having a hard time.
Justin tried his hardest to walk and was able to by putting most of his weight on his front legs, yet the rescue team noticed he was experiencing some discomfort and had to wheel him around in a stroller for longer distances.
In order to help him walk on his own, the staff got Justin his own pair of red booties for his back paws, which improved his balance. At first, Justin needed to adjust to them, but soon enough he was walking and running around without any discomfort.
“He has a magnetic personality and everyone is attracted to him,” said Giovanna Piazza, who adopted Justin and renamed him Jax. While the booties have been a huge help, Piazza brings the adorable pup to rehab specialists every week to work on his core strength and posture, and eventually plans to get him prosthetics.
“In the next few weeks we’ll add a wheelchair (cart with back wheels) and in a year or so prosthetics, once he’s grown to full height and size,” Piazza said. “We’ve got a lot of work ahead but everyone on Jax’s Team is very hopeful for his increased mobility over time.”
