Most people spend New Year’s Eve thinking about the year ahead and everything they hope to do. However, one Michigan man questioned if he’d even make it to New Year’s Day.

While waiting for the New Year’s Eve programming on TV, Bob decided to run outside and get another log for his fire. He went out in the freezing weather in nothing but long johns, slippers, and a shirt thinking he’d be right back inside but ended up slipping on ice and breaking his neck.

“I was screaming for help but my nearest neighbor is about a quarter mile away, and it was 10:30 p.m., but my Kelsey came,” said Bob, who was paralyzed and lying in the snow. “By morning my voice was gone, and I couldn’t yell for help, but Kelsey didn’t stop barking.” For 20 hours, Kelsey kept Bob warm in the 24-degree weather by lying on top of him and licking his face and hands to keep him awake.

“She kept barking for help but never left my side,” said Bob. “She kept me warm and alert. I knew I had to persevere through this and that it was my choice to stay alive.” After 19 hours, Bob passed out, and Kelsey became desperate. “She was letting out this screeching howl that alerted my neighbor. He found me at 6:30 p.m. on New Year’s Day.”Bob was rushed to the hospital, and was hypothermic, had a core body temperature of 70 degrees, and several disks in his spine had been herniated, which has caused a compression on the spinal cord that caused acute paraplegia.

“I was surprised to find out that I didn’t have any frost bite. I am sure it was because of Kelsey’s determination to keep me warm and safe,” said Bob. “I immediately took the patient back to the operating room for decompression of his spinal cord and stabilization,” said Dr. Chaim Colen, Neurosurgeon at McLaren Northern Michigan. “After the surgery, miraculously, he started to move his extremities with greater strength.”

Bob still has a long road of therapy but is recovering.“I am so thankful for my two heroes,” Bob said. “Kelsey kept me warm, alert, and never stopped barking for help. Dr. Colen saved my life and ability to move. They are truly heroes, and I will be eternally grateful.”
