Most soldiers usually can’t wait until they get to finally go home and see their friends and family, and U.S. Marine Sgt. Jacob Fisher was no different.
After finishing a tour of duty, Fisher wouldn’t wait to see his wife and son, however, he was also devastated that he had to leave since it meant he would have to leave behind a small puppy that he rescued and fell in love with while in Afghanistan.
Fisher had found the tiny pup, who he later named Jax, stuck in one of the base’s animal traps. “He looked kind of miserable, shaking a lot,” Fisher said. “He was definitely cold since it was snowing.” Fisher brought him inside the base and started caring for him, and within the first week, he knew he wanted to keep Jax. “Going to Afghanistan I didn’t realize I would even see a dog on the base, let alone fall in love with a dog and want to bring him home,” Fisher said.
So when it was time to go home, Fisher reached out to the SPCA International’s Operation Baghdad Pups, who helped fly Jax halfway across the world to his new home with Fisher and his family in America. It took a few months to organize, but Jax finally made the journey to Fisher, who was waiting anxiously for their reunion.
