At just eight weeks old, puppies are still exploring the world around them and curiously examine everything in their sight.
However, one tiny 8-week-old border terrier mix learned the hard way that sometimes that curiosity could get him into trouble when he started investigating a prickly cactus, got caught in it, and ended up with hundreds of sharp needles sticking out of him.
Luckily an Arizona man was in his backyard when it happened, and heard the tiny puppy’s distressed cries. He immediately called the Arizona Humane Society, who sent an emergency rescuer. However, the good Samaritan couldn’t leave the animal in pain and started working to free him from the cactus.
By the time the rescuer arrived, the man had managed to get the puppy free and had already removed a bucket’s worth of cactus needles. The dog, later named Cactus Jack, was rushed to Arizona Humane Society’s Second Chance Animal Hospital and the rest of the needles were removed. The dog’s “good disposition never wavered. His tail never stopped wagging,” said Britta Nelson, the society’s public relations manager.
Miraculously, none of the needles damaged his eyes or mouth, and was cleared to be put up for adoption, and was quickly adopted, after a round of antibiotics.
