A mother would do absolutely anything for their child, and when one Texas mom and her infant son were pushed off a bridge, she didn’t hesitate to use her body as a human shield to protect him.
Last May, Jennifer Duncan had been taking her then 8-month-old son to daycare when a car nearby spun out and caused her to be involved in a fender bender on top of a busy interstate bridge. Duncan and the other drivers involved pulled over, and as they waited for police to arrive, an approaching vehicle slid out, hit a car that was pulled over, and then pushed Duncan and her baby off the bridge.
“The first things I did was bring my knees up around his body and my hands around his head. I just cradled him and held him tightly,” the 24-year-old mom said about the moments before she smashed into the asphalt road 30 feet below. Duncan’s leg was severed from the fall and her right leg and pelvis were completely shattered. She fractured multiple ribs, damaged internal organs, and broke nine bones in her back. Yet because she sacrificed herself to try and soften the blow for baby Daniel, who goes by his middle name, Xzavian, he received just a small scratch from the accident.
Since last May, Duncan had at least 14 surgeries, spent two months in the hospital, one month in a rehabilitation center, and goes to physical therapy three times a week. Today she mainly gets around by a wheelchair, but has started learning to walk again with the help of a walker. “I want to be able to walk with my son. That’s my major goal. I definitely need to catch up with him,” Duncan said. “He is my No. 1 motivation. I see how he looks at me and how he wants me to play with him.”
“It would definitely would be nice to get back on my own,” said Duncan, who has a GoFundMe to help raise funds for her medical bills and hopefully a prosthetic leg, which costs $40,000. “I’m really trying and I hope people see me not giving up and that it gives others inspiration.”
