Many first time moms are understandably obsessive about their baby’s health and tend to panic when even the most minor health issues arise, which is why doctors often brush aside their concerns.

When Sophie Murray gave birth to her first son Finley in March 2015, she and her sister noticed that his head appeared to be misshaped, but doctors assured them it was normal. “As Finley got bigger and bigger his head got more and more triangular,” Murray said. “He had a ridge that stuck out running down his forehead and a permanent vein down his nose that looked like a bruise.”

And when Finley started getting frequent viral infections, Murray was convinced that something was seriously wrong. “It got to the point where every day he would be clutching his head and screaming from the pain.” Yet doctors continued to insist nothing was wrong.

Murray knew something was wrong and sent pictures of Finley to four different specialists, who replied almost immediately to tell her that he had a serious condition that needed to be treated immediately. Within a week, a specialist took scans of Finley’s head and told Murray that he had metopic synostosis, a type of craniosynostosis which plates in the skull fuse too early in an infant’s skull. Without surgery to relieve the pressure and accommodate a growing brain, the skull literally squeezes the brain to the point where it causes permanent brain damage if not treated before 18 months.

The next week, the 17-month-old went into surgery just in time. “They cut his head open from ear-to-ear, and the surgeon said when they opened up his skull, Finley’s brain was bulging at the top from where it had been so squashed,” Murray said. “They cut off bits of his skull and put them back together like a jigsaw. All his face bones had to be pushed forward.”

“Without the surgery, Finley would have had serious development issues, he would have had facial deformities, he would have been bullied at school. That is the opposite of what you want for your child,” said Murray who is sharing her story to warn parents about the condition. “And Finley is doing amazingly since… I’m so proud of him.”
