Babies don’t always come at the most convenient times. When a pregnant goat from a small Turkish goat farm started going into labor on a snowy cliffside, she had no choice but to give birth right there in the snow.
Hamdü Sena Bilgin, whose family owns a small farm that raises goats for their milk, was thankfully there when it all happened and didn’t hesitate to help the new mom and her baby out. The 11-year-old goatherd and her dog, Tomi, protects and guides the goats while they graze so she knew it was her job to make sure each goat, including the newest addition, made it home safely.
Since the mother goat and her baby would be too exhausted and weak to make it home, Hamdü Sena decided to lead the rest of the herd home so she could come back and focus all of her attention on saving them. “After the goat gave birth, I led the rest of the herd back to the farm,” Hamdü Sena said. “Then I grabbed two backpacks from the house and went back to the goat and her baby with Tomi.”
Hamdü Sena carefully loaded the mother goat in her backpack and placed the baby in her other bag and strapped in on Tomi’s back. “He’s a good dog. Very smart,” she said. “The snow was so thick, I was exhausted. But it was worth it,” said Hamdü Sena, who finally managed to bring both exhausted animals home safely after a long trek in the snow.
