When a group of friends took their boat out on the water one afternoon this past November, they imagined they’de be bringing home a few fish. Yet instead of bringing back some fish when they got back to shore, they brought back a terrified, trembling puppy.
While out fishing, Garrett Matherne and his friends spotted an animal struggling in the water near the muddy bank. “They definitely left her for dead. They threw her off the bridge. She couldn’t even get off the bank when we found her,” said Matherne.
The Louisiana natives gently pulled the terrified dog into the boat but realized the situation was far worse than they first thought. The dog had not only been thrown off a bridge, but her mouth and head had been tied up with tape. They tried to peel the tape off, but decided to gently cut it off with a small knife since they didn’t want to cause her any more pain.
Once the petrified dog was free from the tape, they brought her back to land and eventually back home where they gave her a name. “We figured she had a rough start and she came back, so kind of like Rocky Balboa,” said Matherne. Matherne wanted to keep Rocky, but since he already had three dogs, his boss Robin Carpenter adopted her and gave her a loving home. “Seemed like the right thing to do,” said Carpenter.
“The first few weeks, she was kind of standoffish and nervous and it took her a while to get over that. The first few days, she wouldn’t move by herself, like to go anywhere,” said Carpenter. Now three months later, Rocky is healthy and loved, and has transformed because of it. “She recognizes my truck when I pull up and she’s waiting and she’s just ready to be loved on,” said Matherne. “She’s friendly for what happened. She’ll love on anybody… It’s a good ending to a bad story.”
