Jennifer Callaway always dreamed of becoming a mother, and when she was in her mid-twenties, she thought she still had plenty of time to make that dream happen.
Yet when Callaway was just 27, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and her dreams of motherhood vanished. In order to survive, she had to have her right ovary removed and then went through six rounds of chemotherapy. Thankfully, the treatment worked and a few years later, she met her now husband Brett.
Despite having one ovary left, Callaway told Brett that she had undergone chemotherapy and she didn’t think she could have kids because of it. “I didn’t care. I loved her and knew that we would figure it out,” Brett said. “In my heart of hearts, I was sort of convinced that this was not gonna happen,” Callaway said.
Last year, however, Callaway took three pregnancy tests. One said she was pregnant, the second said she wasn’t, and the third was inconclusive. To be sure, she went to Dr. John Lurain, the gynecologic oncologist who treated her cancer, and he told her the exciting news that she was actually pregnant.
The pregnancy thankfully went well and the couple was finally able to bring home their miracle baby girl after being born via c-section. “If it weren’t for them and their team’s efforts, I wouldn’t be here. Let alone, able to have a baby,” Callaway said.
