Firefighters dedicate their lives to saving others and will do whatever it takes to save someone even when it means risking their own life to do it.
So when firefighter Andrew Klein from the Santa Monica Fire Department arrived at an apartment building that was on fire, he didn’t hesitate to run into the burning building to save a tiny dog that was trapped inside. “I discovered him amidst all the smoke and the heat. I grabbed him and as soon as I grabbed him I knew that he was unresponsive just by his dead weight,” Klein said.

The 10-year-old Bichon Frize/Shih Tzu mix named Nalu wasn’t breathing and didn’t have a pulse when Klein brought him outside. “His eyes were glazed over and he was not breathing and I assumed he was dead,” Nalu’s owner, Crystal Lamirande, said. “The firefighter said ‘I’m a positive person. Let’s just get him back.’”

Klein immediately started performing CPR on Nalu, and for the next 20 minutes, he refused to give up on the small animal. Miraculously, after about 20 minutes, Nalu came back to life. “He was essentially dead, so to see him kissing people and walking around wagging his tail was definitely a good feeling,” Klein said about the dog, who then spent the next 24 hours in an oxygen chamber.

“Our goal is to save people, and sometimes we’re not able to do that despite our best efforts. But to have a success story just like this, even with Nalu being a dog, I mean again he’s a life and he’s a life that matters. That was just a great morale booster for all of the guys here in our department,” Klein said.
