Normally, wild animals keep their distance from villages and cities, but one dehydrated young elephant was forced to wander into a village in southern India in search of water.
This past week, a 10-year-old elephant named Nelly was in a desperate search for water after a drought dried up his usual water sources, and ended up wandering into the village of Govanur in Periyanaickenpalayam, southern India. And in his search for water, Nelly accidentally fell into a 45-foot deep well.
The terrified animal cried out for help all night, and locals found him at the bottom of the well the next morning. For the next two days, Nelly was stuck in the well alone but thankfully the caring locals called for help and made sure he was fed plenty of water and fruit.
“We got a call from the owner of the farm well in the morning and immediately left for the spot,” said Dr. K Asokan, a veterinarian at Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve. “A team of 15-member team of forest rangers and fire department officials toiled for two hours to bring the elephant out of the well.” And after the two-hour rescue mission, Nelly was back on her feet, freed from the harness, and was released back into the wild.
