Animal rescuers can’t bear to let an animal suffer any longer than they already have, but when one Kansas City SPCA worker heard about a dog chained to a cinder block, she dropped everything she was doing and got there as fast as physically possible.
On Friday morning, Great Plains SPCA worker Tonya Hampton got a call from someone who had found a dog chained up to a heavy cinder block and left on the muddy edge of Longview Lake. Since the water level was quickly rising and the dog was at risk of drowning, she jumped in the car, called for help, and headed straight over with just some treats.
As they waited for a Jackson County animal control officer to arrive, park rangers were able to drag the cinderblock out of the thick, deep mud with a rope and get the dog, who rescuers have named Deputy, out of immediate danger. “Deputy was scared at first and hesitant to trust us,” said Hampton. “So it was difficult to get him freed from his cinderblock prison.”
But when Hampton started offering Deputy treats, she quickly gained his trust. “When I arrived, I was able to gain his trust by offering treats and was able to free him from the cinderblock and he walked into a kennel without hesitation,” she said. “Once at the shelter he was still a little reserved, however, after a few minutes he [lit] up as if he knew he was safe. We gave him a bath since he was so very muddy, and he seemed to appreciate our efforts.”
“Our hope is that he finally knows what true love and safety really means, as he has been through so much already,” Hampton said about Deputy, who is now resting at a shelter. “I wish people were more like these dogs, so forgiving and loving. Mankind would be much better off.”
