Last November, a retired Navy SEAL was out for a walk with his 8-year-old service dog on Las Olas Isle when she was tragically struck by a speeding truck.
The Labrador Retriever, Maggie, suffered severe damage to one of her hind legs, and her owner, John Brophy, rushed her immediately to Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists and admitted her to the ICU. “When Maggie arrived, she was in severe shock and an immense amount of pain,” veterinarian Dr. Jenessa Grau said. “Her back left leg was significantly damaged and even showed missing bones in x-rays.”
Unfortunately, Maggie’s leg couldn’t be saved, and the next day the surgeon had to amputate it. And when Brophy struggled to afford the cost of the surgery, doctors decided to pay for her treatment with The Pet’s Tree of Hope fund, which they started the year before to help pay for lifesaving treatments owners couldn’t afford.
Months later, Maggie has finally made a complete recovery and has just received a prosthetic leg so she can walk again. “We are so pleased with the strides Maggie has made through this long recovery process,” said Dr. Jennifer Bibevski. “With more time, care and regular checkups we are optimistic that she will resume a very normal and happy life.”
“When you go through a trauma like this, it is so helpful to have an amazing team of people like those at Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists,” Brophy said. “I couldn’t be more thankful for the help, love and support that I have received since the accident.”
