Being able to see colors is something a lot of people take for granted, but as students from one Pennsylvania high school listened to their history teacher talk about being colorblind, they realized how much he’s missed out on because of it.
“Earlier in the year, he would talk about how he is colorblind,” said student Andrew Bregman said about his teacher, Matt Alzamora. “One day in 7th period, he was talking about an experience he had with his daughter, where one day she was talking about how pretty the sunset was, and he said he just really wanted to be able to see a sunset,” said fellow student Maci Chambers.
The students searched online and found out about a company that makes special glasses that allow colorblind people to see color and assigned a person from each class to collect money. After raising $528, the students were finally able to order the glasses and surprised Alzamora with them during a staff meeting. “I had someone bring in over $100, someone over $50 – people brought in $20s, $10s, $5s so a lot of people pitched in more than what was necessary,” Bregman said.
“It was incredible. It was like vivid. I never realized how many colors there were… Like the balloons. I thought there was only a couple colors. And like now, you can see the difference,” said Alzamora, who had heard about the glasses before, but had never thought about purchasing them for himself. “I had heard about it online but they’re expensive and when you’re colorblind, your whole life, you can’t say you’re missing anything if you’ve never seen it.”
“I am just overwhelmed for him and that the students would do this for him,” said wife Patty Alzamora. “It’s a great community in Lower Providence, the kids are amazing. It’s a credit to the community that they would do something for me of all people,” said Alzamora.
