Shortly after putting his own child to bed, one UK father’s paternal instincts kicked in when he heard a violent crash outside of his parents’ home.
“We knew exactly what it was,” 34-year-old Stephen Jones said. “I looked at my father and I thought he had seen a ghost or something. I ran out of the house and heard a blood-curdling scream – my biggest fear was that there was a child in the car.
When he got outside, he spotted a car sinking in a nearby canal. “A car had gone straight into the canal and so I ran down the bank, well actually more fell down the bank and got into the water…I think the the scary bit was the fact you could hear the person inside the car screaming for help, which was terrifying.
“The windows of the car had smashed in the impact and so I was able to reach my arm in, I felt the back seats and couldn’t feel a car seat or any children. The woman’s voice went quiet and there was a deafening silence, it was then that I knew I had to act quickly. I managed to unlock the door and felt something squidgy – which I knew was a person so I pulled her out.”
“It was completely pitch black. I couldn’t open my eyes either so it was literally by feel,” said Jones. He managed to pull the woman out of the water and she started coughing up water before first responders arrived. “It could have been an awful lot worse than it was. I just did what any human would do.”
