When one Chicago man was driving home from the airport late one evening, he spotted a young girl out of the corner of his eye and thought it was strange that she was all alone so late at night.
“She had two backpacks and she was just walking all by herself,” said Jacob Murphy, who was on his way home. Yet when he drove by and looked at her face, he realized 8-year-old Bella was actually asleep and must have sleepwalked out of her home and onto the busy street.
Murphy immediately pulled over, called the Carol Stream Police Department, and then waited with the girl until officers came and took her home. “We heard a cop say ‘we have somebody here for you,’ and I was like ‘what?'” Bella’s mother, Jamie Soto, said.
Bella, who has type 1 diabetes, could have easily been hit by a car had she walked out onto the road or could have had a seizure and gone into a coma if her blood sugar dropped, which is why Soto is so grateful that Murphy found her when he did. “The other possibilities that could have happened,” Soto said. “And he prevented every single one of those. He saved her… He’s a hero and he needs to know this.”
“I can’t even put into words how grateful I am. How grateful I know she is, our family is,” Soto said. “I wanted to make sure she was safe. I guess that’s a hero? I don’t know,” said Murphy, who claims he was just at the right place at the right time.
