Most people have a hard time figuring out the perfect way to propose to the love of their life, but for one Milwaukee man, there was only one place: the kindergarten classroom where they first met.
Chris Peronto and his girlfriend Nanette Behrens grew up across the street from each other and met as classmates in kindergarten at Schulte Elementary School in 1978. “This is where it all began,” said Peronto.
“A big part of our story is growing up together. We grew up across the street from each other. We’ve known each other since we were toddlers. I remember at 4 years old she wasn’t allowed to cross the street and I wasn’t allowed to cross the street. And we were both riding our Big Wheels up and down the sidewalk on opposite sides of the street. That’s how far back our relationship goes.”
As they got older, they only got closer and they even shared their first kiss in one of the school’s bathrooms. However, everything suddenly ended when Behrens and her family moved away and they lost touch. The two moved on with life, eventually got married and had children with other people, but then reconnected after they were both divorced. “I always wondered what happened to Chris,” said Behrens.
The kindergarten sweethearts became friends again and then started dating. “It’s been the biggest blessing of my life,” said Peronto. So when Peronto wanted to propose, he knew he had to take her back to their kindergarten classroom to do it and even got the current kindergarteners to help out. “For me, it made perfect sense to bring her here and involve the school and the community that we grew up in.”
When the couple arrived, the kids started singing a special song that they had practiced all week, and when they sang out the line ‘will you be my fiancée?’ Peronto got down on one knee and asked the same question, which Behrens immediately said yes to. “I was shaking, I was shaking when I was putting the ring on her finger,” Peronto said.
