Back in 2015, one yellow Labrador nicknamed ‘the saddest dog in the world’ attracted thousands of adoption applications after a photo spread online of her looking depressed and hopeless in a shelter.
The dog, whose real name is Lana, was born in Mexico and was the runt of the litter. To give her a better chance at a happy life, she was sent to Toronto, Canada but she tragically just bounced around from foster home to foster home. Eventually, a family adopted Lana and shelter workers were thrilled she would finally have the life she deserved.
However, because Lana was the runt of the family, she had to fight for food as a baby and is still very possessive of her food. And when her adopted mom was feeding her one night, Lana snapped at her so they brought her back to the shelter since they were afraid she might bite one of their young kids. Lana was completely dejected and stopped eating or going on walks. But when the photo of her looking so sad was shared online, thousands of adoption applications came rolling in.
Tragically, her second home didn’t last very long either, and in July 2106 she was back in the shelter. “Lana’s adoption did not work out because people want a dog they can pet and play with,” said Brenda Dobranski, the founder of Rescue Dogs Match. “Lana is a silly fun girl but she is not the type of dog that will let you give belly rubs to and sleep in bed with.”
Lana hasn’t found a forever family since, and because of overcrowding at her current facility, she only has until May 20th to be adopted or she’ll likely have to be put down. “We need to keep Lana’s happiness and well being at the forefront,” Dobranski said. “It is not fair for her to have to keep moving around. She just settles and becomes accepting [only] to be up rooted again. Every time she moves her progress is set back.”
“The best family for her would be a mature couple or person that has the time, patience, determination and commitment to help her become more confident,” Rescue Dogs Match wrote. “She is sweet and silly, that is hard-wired into her character. She is timid, wary of strangers only at first. When she is not around the people she trusts, she has the tendency to shut down or become very hesitant.”
“I am not sure what will happen to Lana on [May 20],” Dobranski said. “Unfortunately, euthanasia is an option, but with all the time and support and money that has been offered to Lana I don’t even want to think about it.”
