Every night on his drive to work, one Illinois man stops at a local convenience store to pick up a doughnut and a bottle of water for his shift ahead.

During his stop at the Circle K Market, Jim Copeland would often make small talk with Johnny Phillips, who works behind the counter. And after months of slowly getting to know each other, Copeland discovered that in order for Phillips to make it to his 10-hour shift at the convenience store, he had to walk two hours from his home and then two another two hours back at the end of his arduous shift.

“And it’s a bad neighborhood he had to walk through,” Copeland said. “I figured if he did all that, he was really dedicated. And maybe I could help him.” While driving to work recently, Copeland decided to buy Phillips a bike. After finding a reasonably priced bike on Craigslist, Copeland took the bike to a friend, who oiled the chain, and made some adjustments so the bike would be perfect.

Once the bike was ready, Copeland brought it to the store, told Phillips to close his eyes, and then placed the bike in his hands. When Phillips finally opened his eyes and saw the gift, he was stunned. “He’s laughing down deep inside, then he started tearing up,” Copeland said. “I wanted to get him something special. He’s a go-getter.”
