Lately, social media has been called to question, as researchers express concern over the effects increased use has on people. From anxiety and depression to behavioral issues, it seems the negatives of social media might be outweighing the good.
For celebrities, social media gives them the ability to interact with fans, and set rumors straight. However, not all celebrities can see the appeal of social media when it means giving up the privacy they’ve worked hard to achieve.
See which of your favorite Hollywood celebs avoid social media at all cost:
10. Kate Winslet
“It has a huge impact on young women’s self-esteem, because all they ever do is design themselves for people to like them. And what comes along with that? Eating disorders. And that makes my blood boil. And is the reason we don’t have any social media in our house.” — The Sunday Times
9. Jennifer Aniston
”Kids aren’t speaking to each other anymore. I was with friends of ours from Vermont and their two kids don’t have an iPhone or an iPad. They were 9 and 12 and were the most interesting young adults. Seeing other kids on their [phones] all the time, it makes me sad.” — People
8. Johnny Depp
“I just don’t like phones. I just don’t like them . . . being reachable all the time.” – Access Hollywood
7. Jennifer Lawrence
“I will never get Twitter. I’m not very good on [a] phone or technology. I cannot really keep up with emails, so the idea of Twitter is so unthinkable to me. If you ever see a Facebook, Instagram or Twitter that says it’s me, it most certainly is not. I had that one locked and loaded. Because the internet has scorned me so much.’” — BBC Radio 1
6. Angelina Jolie-Pitt
“Brad and I were on Amazon.com for the first time a week ago. But we got lost. After an hour, we just shut it off. My brain is too scattered, and the wires go in different directions. I’ll stick to catalogs.”— USA Today
5. Daniel Radcliffe
“There’s certain things you can do to make it a lot easier on yourself . . . I don’t have Twitter and I don’t have Facebook, and I think that makes things a lot easier because if you go on Twitter and tell everybody what you’re doing moment to moment and then claim you want a private life, then no one is going to take that request seriously.”— Sky News
4. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen
“[Twitter] gives me so much anxiety.” —Ashley Olsen, Vogue.com
“We’ve spent our whole lives trying to not let people have that accessibility, so it would go against everything we’ve done in our lives to not be in the public.” —Mary-Kate Olsen, Vogue.com
3. Keira Knightley
“If you are on social media and if you do put anything out in the public, you are opening yourself up now to a lot of criticism and a lot of people telling you they hate you.”
2. Julia Roberts
“I have too much potential for collapse . . . There’s an anonymity that makes people feel safe to participate in hatefulness. I like a good old-fashioned fistfight if people are pissed off at each other. I just feel like if you’re really mad and want to have a fight, then put your dukes up.”— Marie Claire
1. George Clooney
“I’d rather have a rectal examination on live TV by a fellow with cold hands than have a Facebook page.” — at the Tortonto Film Festival
