Bella Burton was diagnosed with Morquio syndrome when she was just 2 and a half years old. The rare genetic condition makes normal childhood activities like bike riding and running.
The syndrome occurs in about 1 in every 200,000 births, and can lead to organ damage, abnormal development of the bones and spine, paralysis, and heart issues. Bella mobility was already deteriorating, but then she met a 2-year-old Great Dane named George, and she was suddenly able to do all the things other kids could do easily.
Before George came along, running, riding bikes, and even walking was a challenge for Bella. She often needed crutches and even a wheelchair to get around.
“I had wheelchairs, walkers, Canadian crutches, regular crutches, and then we got George and I dropped my crutches and started to use him,” Bella said.
11-year-old Bella weighs jus 44-pound, and stands just over three and a half feet tall. She relies on George’s 131-pound frame as she holds onto a harness attached to his back to steady her as she walks.
