While this furry creature bears a striking resemblance to the scavengers we’re all too familiar with, the unusual creature is not a raccoon, but actually a tanuki, or raccoon dog, which is part of the same family of mammals as dogs, wolfs, coyotes, and foxes.
Despite being a naturally wild animals in East Asia, Twitter user chibi_tori found the small creature, which he later nicknamed ‘Tanu’, alone and in need of care.
Tanu was abandoned and when Chibi_Tori found him last June, he took the adorable creature in, and has been caring for him ever since.
Like raccoons and dogs, Tanukis are happy to eat just about anything you put in front of them, and Tanu can’t contain his happiness as he gets his yummy dinner.
Despite being covered in a fluffy coat of fur, raccoon dogs hibernate during the colder months. Tanu spends most of his days curled up napping in front of a small heater to keep warm during the winter.
