When Brady Lucas was just 8 years old, he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, he entered the Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital to start treatment. But soon his family struggled to pay for the costly medical bills.
Luckily, Four Diamonds, a charity that helps families pay for the treatment costs of the pediatric cancer patients at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. Since 1977, students from Penn State University’s THON fundraising event has raised $127 million for the charity, which ultimately is what allowed Brady to get his life-saving treatment.
“The emotional support is the dearest thing to my heart,” Brady said. “It kept me smiling, it kept me going for more than just myself and my family, for every single kid in the world. Without THON, I wouldn’t be here today.”
Now, the 19-year old attends Penn State University and is sharing his story at THON events to help raise funds so that other kids like him can get the treatment they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.
“It’s more cool for me to be able to stand for all the children that unfortunately can’t have the opportunity to stand or who are fighting every single day to just live their lives,” Lucas told ABC News.
